The Rwanda self-drive circuit covering Volcanoes National Park, Nyungwe Forest National Park, and Akagera National Park is the complete Rwanda wildlife experience in a single 10-day loop — combining mountain gorilla trekking (Volcanoes), chimpanzee and bird trekking (Nyungwe), and savannah game driving (Akagera) in the most compact East Africa multi-ecosystem circuit available. Rwanda’s road network is the best-maintained in East Africa — fully tarmacked connections between Kigali and all three parks, with travel times that make the Rwanda self-drive circuit Volcanoes Nyungwe Akagera genuinely comfortable compared to the rough murram approaches of Uganda or Tanzania’s more remote circuits. This guide provides the day-by-day 2027/2028 Rwanda self-drive circuit plan.
Rwanda Self-Drive Circuit: Distances and Drive Times
- Kigali to Musanze (Volcanoes NP gateway): 110km via RN2 tarmac highway — approximately 2.5 hours drive. The road is excellent tarmac throughout — no murram sections.

- Nyungwe to Akagera NP (eastern Rwanda): 345km via Kigali — approximately 5 to 5.5 hours. The Akagera park gate is 100km northeast of Kigali on the RN3.
- Akagera to Kigali: 100km tarmac — 2 hours.
- Total circuit distance: approximately 785km in 10 days — an average of 78km driving per day, the most manageable circuit distance of any East Africa multi-park self-drive.
