Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in Uganda’s extreme southwest is overshadowed by its neighbour Bwindi, and that is a mistake. Mgahinga is the only place in Uganda where golden monkey trekking is offered — a vivid, acrobatic primate experience in a volcanic landscape beneath three Virunga volcanoes. It also has gorillas (the Nyakagezi family, one of the most reliable families in the region), and it shares the same volcanic scenery as Rwanda’s famous Volcanoes National Park — for a fraction of the tourists and prices. On a self-drive, it is a genuinely special detour.
Getting to Mgahinga by Self-Drive
Mgahinga lies in Kisoro District, Uganda’s furthest southwestern corner, just 3 km from the Rwanda border. The park entrance is at Ntebeko, 14 km from Kisoro town. From Kampala, the total drive is 510 km — approximately 9–10 hours. The route goes via Masaka, Mbarara, Kabale, and Kisoro. The road from Kabale to Kisoro (90 km) is tarmac, scenic, and passes through spectacular highland valleys with views of the Virunga volcanoes on the horizon — a genuinely beautiful stretch of road.
From Bwindi Impenetrable Forest (Buhoma sector), Mgahinga is about 3 hours via Kabale and Kisoro — making it a logical next stop after Bwindi for visitors already in the southwest.
The Golden Monkey Trek
The golden monkey (Cercopithecus kandti) is found only in the Virunga Volcano range — a tiny geographic distribution shared between Uganda, Rwanda, and DRC. The Mgahinga population is the only one accessible for trekking in Uganda. These are extraordinary animals: brilliantly coloured with golden-orange flanks, black limbs, and a vivid face, they move through bamboo forest in large troops of 60–80 individuals, leaping between bamboo poles with athletic speed.
Trek logistics: Depart briefing at 8am from the park headquarters at Ntebeko. The trek typically takes 1–3 hours to locate the troop, followed by one hour in their presence. The bamboo forest zone where golden monkeys live ranges from 2,250–3,000 metres elevation — it can be cold, particularly in the early morning. Dress warmly. The trek involves significant elevation gain through the bamboo zone.
Permit cost: USD $60 per person for the standard golden monkey trek. The habituation experience (spend more time with the troop alongside researchers) is USD $100 per person. Both are booked through Uganda Wildlife Authority. Availability is generally better than Bwindi gorilla permits — you can usually get a golden monkey permit 4–8 weeks ahead, even in peak season.
Gorillas at Mgahinga
Mgahinga’s single habituated gorilla family — the Nyakagezi group — is one of the most consistently sighted in the region. Unlike the Bwindi families, the Nyakagezi group uses the tri-country border zone between Uganda, Rwanda, and DRC, which historically caused permit uncertainty (they sometimes moved into Rwanda temporarily, making Uganda permits unusable on those days). The group has become more settled in Uganda territory in recent years. Gorilla permits here cost USD $800 per person — identical to Bwindi. When Nyakagezi is available, it is a valuable alternative if Bwindi sectors are sold out.
The Batwa Pygmy Cultural Experience
The Batwa Pygmy people lived inside the Mgahinga and Bwindi forests as hunters and gatherers until the early 1990s, when the national parks were gazetted and they were relocated to the forest margins. The Batwa cultural experience at Mgahinga — offered through the park and local community organisations — is the most authentic access to Batwa traditional knowledge in Uganda. The programme includes forest tracking skills, traditional fire-making, honey gathering, and medicinal plant identification. Cost: USD $20–$30 per person through most tour desks in Kisoro.
Volcano Hiking from Mgahinga
Mgahinga’s three volcanoes — Mount Muhabura (4,127m), Mount Gahinga (3,474m), and Mount Sabinyo (3,645m) — can all be climbed with UWA guides. Mount Sabinyo is the most popular, with a summit route that passes through three countries in a single hike (Uganda, Rwanda, and DRC at separate summit points on the triple border). The hike takes 7–10 hours and involves significant elevation gain. Cost: USD $80 per person with guide. Book through UWA or your lodge in Kisoro.
