Ruaha National Park self-drive is Tanzania’s greatest and least visited safari destination — a 20,226 sq km park (Tanzania’s largest, and the largest Tanzania has) in the southern highlands, centred on the Great Ruaha River and its extraordinary concentration of predators: the highest wild dog density in Africa, a lion population of 600 to 1,000 individuals (among the largest on the continent), and regular leopard, cheetah, and crocodile sightings on the river banks. The Ruaha National Park self-drive is not for inexperienced visitors or standard hire vehicles — Iringa (the nearest town with fuel) is 130km from the park gate, the internal tracks are some of the roughest in East Africa’s park system, and the nearest Arusha Dar hire depots are 7 to 8 hours’ drive from the gate. For visitors who make the journey in an appropriate expedition vehicle, Ruaha delivers a wilderness game drive experience with zero other vehicles on the tracks and a wildlife density that rivals any park in Africa.
Ruaha National Park Self-Drive: Getting There
Dar es Salaam to Ruaha Gate (600km, 8 to 9 hours)
Drive west on the A7 from Dar es Salaam to Morogoro (200km, 2.5 hours). Continue west on the A7 to Iringa (300km from Morogoro, 4 hours). Fill fuel completely in Iringa — the last reliable fuel source. Continue west 130km from Iringa to Ruaha Msembe gate (2 hours on tarmac then murram). Total Dar to Ruaha: 600km, 8 to 9 hours.
Arusha to Ruaha Gate (650km, 9 to 10 hours)
Drive south from Arusha on the B1 to Dodoma (440km, 6 hours). Continue south on the A104 to Iringa (130km, 2 hours). Iringa fuel stop. Continue to Ruaha gate (130km, 2 hours). Total Arusha to Ruaha: 650km, 9 to 10 hours — a full day’s drive requiring an overnight in Iringa before proceeding to Ruaha.
Ruaha Entry and Game Drive
- Adult entry fee (non-resident): USD 70 per person per 24 hours (TANAPA eCitizen)
- Vehicle entry: USD 40 per vehicle per day
- Msembe gate: Main entry gate. TANAPA visitor centre and the Ruaha River Camp area are within 10km of the gate.
- Great Ruaha River circuit: The main game drive follows the Great Ruaha River banks — the most reliable predator concentration area. Wild dog dens, lion prides on the riverbank kopjes, leopard in the riparian trees, and hippo pools throughout the river system.
- Remote southern circuit: The Jongomero area (southern Ruaha) is the most remote section — accessible only in a Land Cruiser 76 or equivalent in the dry season, and only by expedition-equipped vehicles in the wet season.
Ruaha Self-Drive: Essential Planning
- Fuel: Carry 40 litres of spare fuel beyond the full tank at Iringa for the Ruaha remote circuit driving
- Vehicle: Land Cruiser 76 or Land Cruiser Prado minimum for the main circuit; Land Cruiser 76 required for the southern Jongomero circuit
- Communication: Limited to no mobile coverage inside Ruaha — satellite device recommended
- Season: June to October (dry season) — the river contracts to pools, concentrating wildlife. April to May is largely inaccessible.
