Murchison Falls National Park self-drive places Uganda’s most visited national park within direct reach of independent visitors — a 290km drive north from Kampala via Gulu or Masindi (4 to 4.5 hours) to a park where the Nile River crashes through a 7-metre rock gap with a roar that can be heard from the river banks kilometres away. The Murchison Falls National Park self-drive north bank circuit is Uganda’s best game drive for lion, giraffe, elephant, and kob antelope density — the open savanna north of the Nile gives the longest game-viewing visibility of any Uganda park. Combined with the top of the falls drive (a 7km track from the north bank circuit to the falls’ rim) and the Paraa ferry river crossing, the Murchison Falls National Park self-drive delivers a complete Uganda safari in a single park.

Kampala to Murchison Falls: The Route

Route 1: Via Masindi (290km, 4 hours)

Drive north from Kampala on the A1 (Gulu highway) to Kafu junction (170km, 2 hours). Turn west on the B1 to Masindi town (40km, 30 minutes). From Masindi, take the park road north to Kichumbanyobo gate (50km, 1 hour on murram). Cross the Paraa ferry (on arrival — free for all vehicles, runs from 7am to 7pm, 30-minute wait average) to the north bank. The Paraa ferry is the only vehicle crossing point between the south bank accommodation and the north bank game drive circuit.

Route 2: Via Gulu (340km, 4.5 hours)

Drive north on the A1 to Gulu (340km from Kampala, 4.5 hours on tarmac). From Gulu, turn southwest on the B45 toward the Tangi gate (northern Murchison entrance, 50km from Gulu). The Gulu route enters Murchison Falls National Park from the north — gives direct access to the north bank without the Paraa ferry. Preferred for visitors based in northern Uganda or doing the Gulu-Kidepo corridor.

Murchison Falls North Bank Circuit: The Main Game Drive

The Murchison Falls National Park self-drive north bank circuit is 65km of graded murram from Paraa north through the Buligi game drive area to the Albert Nile. The north bank is Uganda’s most productive game drive area:

  • Rothschild’s giraffe: Murchison holds Uganda’s largest population of the endangered Rothschild’s giraffe — conspicuous on the open Buligi plains, visible from the game drive track within 30 minutes of the Paraa ferry crossing.
  • Lion: The north bank pride territories are well-established — lion sightings are common in the morning in the open Buligi grasslands, particularly near the Albert Nile bank.
  • Elephant: Large elephant herds use the north bank riparian vegetation. The Albert Nile riverine strip is a reliable elephant zone at dawn and dusk.
  • Buffalo and kob: Jackson’s kob (the Uganda national emblem) and Cape buffalo are abundant on the Buligi plains — large herds visible throughout the game drive.

Top of the Falls Drive: How to Get to the Murchison Falls Viewpoint

The top of the falls viewpoint is reached by a separate 7km track from the north bank circuit (turn west from the Buligi junction approximately 15km north of Paraa). The track ends at a parking area 300m from the falls rim. From the parking area, walk (300m) to the viewpoint — the Nile squeezes through a 7-metre gap in the rock wall with enormous force, plunging 43m into the Devil’s Cauldron below. The Murchison Falls National Park self-drive top-of-falls stop takes 45 minutes to 1 hour. Go in the morning when the water catches the light and the spray rainbow is visible. The track to the falls top is not suitable for vehicles with low clearance — stay on the designated route.
