Nyungwe Forest self-drive Rwanda is the country’s most underrated safari destination — a 228km drive southwest from Kigali through Rwanda’s spectacular southern highlands to one of Africa’s oldest montane rainforests, home of the largest recorded Angola colobus monkey troop on the continent (400+ individuals moving together through the canopy), the famous Nyungwe canopy walk (one of East Africa’s most photogenic wildlife experiences), and 13 species of primate including chimpanzee, L’Hoest’s monkey, and olive baboon. The Nyungwe Forest self-drive Rwanda route on the RN2 highway passes through Rwanda’s finest tea country, the Congo-Nile divide (where rainfall flows either to the Congo River or the Nile), and some of the greenest, most dramatically terraced landscapes in East Africa.

Kigali to Nyungwe Forest: The RN2 Drive

Drive south from Kigali on the RN1 to Butare (Huye) — 136km, 1.5 hours on excellent tarmac. At Butare, turn west on the RN2 toward Nyungwe (90km, 1.5 hours). The RN2 from Butare to Nyungwe climbs progressively into the Albertine Rift montane zone — the road at the Cyamudongo forest boundary (65km west of Butare) reaches approximately 2,500 metres elevation. The RN2 through Nyungwe is one of the most beautiful drives in Rwanda: the road cuts through the forest with tree canopy overhead, tea plantations on the hillsides, and the mist-covered Nyungwe peaks rising behind. Total Kigali to Nyungwe Forest main sector: 228km, approximately 3 hours.

Nyungwe Forest Canopy Walk (2027/2028)

  • Cost: USD 60 per person (includes canopy walk and a forest guide)
  • Walk duration: 1.5 to 2 hours
  • Starting point: Uwinka visitor centre (on the RN2, clearly signposted)
  • The canopy walk crosses three suspension bridges above the Uwinka forest canopy — the main bridge is 90 metres long and suspended 50 metres above the forest floor. Morning (7am to 9am) is optimal for both bird activity and lower wind.
  • Age/fitness requirement: No minimum age, but the approach trail involves a 30-minute uphill walk. Average fitness is sufficient.
  • Booking: In advance through Rwanda Development Board (rdb.rw) or in person at the Uwinka visitor centre (same-day availability possible in low season)

Angola Colobus Monkey Trek: Nyungwe’s Signature Wildlife

The Nyungwe Forest self-drive Rwanda Angola colobus trek (separate from the canopy walk, USD 100 per person with guide) follows the ranger-tracked colobus supertroop through the forest. The 400+ individual troop is the largest recorded colobus aggregation — moving through the canopy in a wave of black-and-white, calling and crashing through branches in a spectacle that has no equivalent anywhere in East Africa. The colobus trek starts at 6:30am from the Uwinka visitor centre and lasts 2 to 4 hours depending on the troop’s location in the forest.

Nyungwe Forest Hire Vehicle Considerations

The RN2 highway through Nyungwe is good tarmac — a standard high-clearance saloon or SUV can reach Uwinka visitor centre without difficulty. However, the side roads leading to the chimp trekking zones (Cyamudongo forest) and some accommodation facilities within the Nyungwe zone are murram and steep — a 4WD hire vehicle is recommended for any visitor planning to explore beyond the main RN2 visitor centre areas. The Nyungwe Forest self-drive Rwanda is technically the easiest major Rwanda wildlife destination to reach by road, but the forest’s high altitude (1,600 to 2,950m) means temperatures drop sharply at night — even in the dry season, carry warm clothing for the canopy walk and early morning trekking.
