Uganda’s southern circuit links three of the country’s most celebrated wildlife experiences in a single road loop from Kampala: Queen Elizabeth National Park’s Kazinga Channel and lion-rich Kasenyi plains, the Ishasha sector’s famous tree-climbing lion prides, and Bwindi Impenetrable Forest’s mountain gorilla trekking. The 7-day circuit covers approximately 1,200 kilometres of driving, with the majority on good tarmac highway and shorter sections on murram approach roads to the parks and gorilla sector. This loop can be extended with a Lake Bunyonyi overnight or a Rwanda border crossing for visitors with more time, but the core 7-day circuit is a complete and self-contained Uganda wildlife experience that balances savannah game drives, boat safaris, and primate tracking in a logical geographic sequence.

Day 1: Kampala to Queen Elizabeth National Park (420km, 5.5 Hours)

Depart Kampala at 5:30am. Drive the Mbarara highway southwest — the road is dual carriageway for the first 60km to Mpigi. Fill fuel at Mbarara (270km from Kampala, 3.5 hours). Top up fuel again at Kasese (50km from the park). Enter the park through Katunguru Gate on the north side of the Kazinga Channel. Arrive Mweya by 3pm — sufficient time for a late afternoon Kazinga Channel boat trip (departs 2pm, 2 hours). Overnight Mweya peninsula (lodge or campsite).

Day 2: Queen Elizabeth — Kasenyi Game Drive and Second Boat Trip

6:30am dawn game drive on the Kasenyi plains (lion, buffalo, Uganda kob — the flat open savannah northwest of Mweya is the most productive lion territory). Return to Mweya by 10am for breakfast. Optional: Kyambura Gorge chimp tracking (USD 50 per person, 8am start, book evening before). 2pm second Kazinga Channel boat trip for visitors who did not do it on Day 1, or a second Kasenyi afternoon drive. The combination of two different game drive times (dawn and late afternoon) and a boat trip gives the most complete wildlife coverage of the north sector. Overnight Mweya.

Day 3: Queen Elizabeth to Ishasha (100km, 2.5 Hours Through the Park)

Drive south through Queen Elizabeth National Park on the internal road from Mweya to Ishasha (80km through the park, plus 20km external road to Ishasha camp). Allow 2.5 to 3 hours for this section — the road passes through varied habitats including the Maramagambo Forest section (colobus monkey) and the southern plains (elephants en route). Arrive Ishasha by early afternoon. Afternoon game drive specifically targeting the tree-climbing lion fig trees on the open plains west of the Ishasha River. Overnight Ishasha sector (Ishasha Wilderness Camp or UWA campsite). If tree-climbing lions were not found this afternoon, tomorrow morning gives a second opportunity before the drive to Kabale.

Day 4: Ishasha to Kabale (110km, 2.5 Hours)

Dawn game drive in Ishasha (6am, prime tree-climbing lion time — the prides often move to the fig trees at first light before the heat makes shaded tree branches preferable). Depart Ishasha after the morning drive. Drive southeast through Rukungiri to Kabale (110km, 2.5 hours on the road via the Rukungiri-Kabale highway). Fill fuel at Kabale — this is the last reliable fuel before Bwindi in either direction. Overnight in Kabale (White Horse Inn is the standard visitor accommodation). Tomorrow requires an early departure for the gorilla trekking briefing at the park sector.

Day 5: Bwindi Gorilla Trekking

Depart Kabale at 6:00am for Buhoma (60km, 1.5 hours) or Rushaga (80km, 2 hours) depending on permit sector. UWA briefing at 7:30am to 8am. Gorilla trek (duration varies, 1 to 6 hours). Return to accommodation for lunch. Afternoon: rest or an optional Bwindi village walk (community walks available near both Buhoma and Rushaga, approximately USD 15 to 20 per person, visit traditional homes and the forest edge). Overnight near Bwindi or return to Kabale.

Day 6: Bwindi/Kabale to Mbarara (180km, 2.5 Hours)

Optional morning: Lake Bunyonyi (20km from Kabale) — a crater lake system of extraordinary beauty with 29 islands, excellent for a 2-hour early morning detour before the drive east. Drive Kabale to Mbarara on the main highway (180km, 2.5 hours). Overnight Mbarara — several good hotels in town at USD 60 to 120 per person.

Day 7: Mbarara to Kampala (270km, 3.5 Hours)

Depart Mbarara at 7am, arrive Kampala by 10:30am to 11am. Return vehicle in Kampala. The 7-day southern circuit total: Queen Elizabeth (2 nights, Kazinga boat, Kasenyi lion drives), Ishasha (1 night, tree-climbing lions), Bwindi (1 night, gorilla trekking). Approximate park fee total for 2 adults: USD 2,500 (including gorilla permits USD 1,600, QENP entry USD 310, Bwindi entry USD 120, Kyambura chimp optional USD 100, Ishasha vehicle entry USD 80).
