Five days from Arusha is enough to cover the core of Tanzania’s northern circuit: Tarangire’s elephant spectacle, Lake Manyara’s tree-climbing lions and hippo pools, the Ngorongoro Crater’s densest wildlife concentration, and the Serengeti’s boundless plains. Five days is tight — each park deserves more time — but it is the realistic minimum for a first Tanzania self-drive that covers the circuit’s key experiences without reducing every park to a rushed transit. This itinerary structures the five days to maximise time inside each park and minimises the daily driving burden so you arrive at each destination with energy for the actual safari rather than just the recovery from getting there.

Day 1: Arusha to Tarangire (110km, 1.5 to 2 Hours)

Depart Arusha early — 6:30am or earlier. Collect your hire vehicle the evening before and load it the night before departure day. Fill fuel in Arusha before departure. The drive to Tarangire’s main gate via Makuyuni junction takes 1.5 to 2 hours. Enter the park at gate opening (6am to 6:30am) for a full morning of game viewing before the midday heat builds. Spend the morning on the Tarangire River circuit, stopping for the elephant concentrations (in dry season) or the baobab zone photography. Exit the park in the early afternoon and continue to the Karatu area (2.5 hours from Tarangire main gate) for an overnight. Karatu is the correct base for Ngorongoro access the following morning.

Accommodation in Karatu: Gibbs Farm (premium, working coffee farm, USD 300 to 500 per person), Ngorongoro Farmhouse (mid-range, USD 150 to 250 per person), budget guesthouses in Karatu town (USD 30 to 80 per room). Fuel: fill at Usa River on departure from Arusha; top up at Karatu on arrival — this is essential as there is no fuel between Karatu and Seronera.

Day 2: Lake Manyara Morning, Ngorongoro Rim Afternoon

A split day: morning at Lake Manyara National Park (a compact 2 to 3 hour circuit of the lakeshore groundwater forest and hippo pools), then drive to Ngorongoro rim for the afternoon. Lake Manyara gate is 15km south of Karatu at Mto wa Mbu — a straightforward 30-minute drive. Enter Manyara at 7am for the morning session. The park’s famous tree-climbing lions are most reliably seen in the dense fever tree forest near the lake shore in the morning hours. The hippo pool near the park centre is a reliable stop — hippo densities here are among the highest per square metre of any East Africa waterhole. Exit Manyara by 11am and drive to the NCA Lodoare Gate for NCAA entry and the crater rim road. The Ngorongoro Sopa Lodge and Serena Lodge on the eastern and western rim respectively are the overnight options. Spending the night on the rim (2,300m) is cold by Tanzanian standards — bring a fleece.

NCAA entry fee paid at Lodoare Gate covers the transit and overnight on the rim. Crater descent permit (USD 295 per vehicle) is separate and paid at the Seneto or Lerai descent point gate. Pre-book your crater descent permit through the NCAA online portal where possible — demand for crater descent slots can outpace availability in peak season.

Day 3: Ngorongoro Crater Descent, then Transit to Serengeti

The full day at the Ngorongoro Crater is the circuit’s centrepiece. Enter the crater at 7am via the Seneto descent (west rim road) or the Lerai descent (south rim) after paying the crater service fee. The crater floor covers 260 square kilometres at 1,800 metres elevation — a self-contained ecosystem with all of the Big Five present year-round, including one of the highest black rhino densities in Africa. Structure the crater day: morning drive around the Munge River hippo pool and the Lerai Forest (leopard territory), midday at the Ngoitoktok picnic site on the crater floor (the only vehicle picnic allowed on the floor — pack your own food), afternoon drive through the short-grass plains in the northwest crater where the lion prides and the black rhino concentrate. Ascend the crater via the Lerai (south) ascent by 5pm.

After the crater, transit from the NCA to the Serengeti via the Naabi Hill Gate. The Seneto descent exits onto the Serengeti plains at the base of the NCA western escarpment — the Naabi Hill gate is approximately 40km from the descent base. Enter the Serengeti at Naabi Hill (pay TANAPA entry via portal booking) and drive the 80km to Seronera. Allow 3 to 4 hours from the crater ascent to Seronera. This is a long Day 3 — budget the day carefully to avoid arriving at Seronera after dark. Target Seronera arrival by 6:30pm.

Day 4: Full Day in the Serengeti

The full Serengeti day from Seronera is the circuit’s wildlife pinnacle. Dawn departure from the campsite or lodge at 6am — no gate to wait for, already inside the park. Drive the Seronera River circuit first: the riverine forest and granite kopjes along the Seronera River hold the most habituated predators in the park. The female leopard and her young that use the sausage trees above the river are often visible at dawn — the ranger-stationed at Seronera frequently knows the morning location. Then expand to the plains circuits: the long grass plains north of Seronera toward the Moru Kopjes for cheetah and the open grassland wildlife. Afternoon: the Retima area east of Seronera for the migration’s position if it is within the central Serengeti (July to October). Return to Seronera camp by 6:30pm for sunset over the plains from the kopje viewpoints near the lodge.

Day 5: Serengeti to Arusha via Ngorongoro (335km, 7 to 9 Hours)

The return day. Depart Seronera at 6am — one final early morning circuit of the Seronera River area (lions are most active at dawn before they retire to shade). Drive to Naabi Hill Gate and exit the Serengeti by 9am. Transit through the NCA via the Naabi Hill entry and the Lodoare exit (NCAA transit fee applies if more than 24 hours have elapsed since Day 3 entry). Stop at the Ngorongoro Crater rim viewpoint on the eastern road for a final view into the caldera before descending toward Karatu. Karatu is the fuel stop — fill completely for the Arusha return. Continue northeast to Mto wa Mbu, Makuyuni, and Arusha. Arrive Arusha by 4pm to 6pm depending on crater rim and Karatu timing. Return the hire vehicle that evening or the following morning per the hire agreement.
