The drive from Kigali to Volcanoes National Park is the most rewarding short drive in Rwanda — 110 kilometres of well-maintained highway through central Rwanda’s rolling hills, arriving at the base of the Virunga volcanoes for a gorilla trekking experience that few wildlife encounters in Africa equal. The Route: Kigali to Musanze to Kinigi
The drive has two logical stages: Kigali to Musanze town (97km), and Musanze to Kinigi village near the park headquarters (13km). The total distance is approximately 110km. Without stops, the drive takes 1.5 to 2 hours depending on Kigali traffic at departure. The only practical route is the KN road through central Kigali to the northern expressway (the Route nationale 1 / RN1) heading toward Musanze. The road is well-maintained dual carriageway for the first section out of Kigali, narrowing to a single carriageway through the hilly terrain north of Rulindo. Kigali Departure

Musanze Town: Fuel, Breakfast and the Last Stop
Musanze (formerly Ruhengeri) is the main town before Volcanoes National Park. It sits 97km from Kigali at approximately 1,850 metres elevation. Musanze has a TotalEnergies station on the main road through town — this is the last reliable fuel before the park and the point where self-drive visitors should top up completely. The town also has basic breakfast options at local restaurants and a small supermarket for any last-minute supplies (water, snacks for the trek). Allow 20 to 30 minutes in Musanze. The town centre is compact and easy to navigate. Fill fuel, buy water (minimum 2 litres per person for the trek itself), and continue north toward Kinigi. The road from Musanze to Kinigi is a clear 13km run — drive straight through Musanze town and follow signs for Volcanoes National Park.
Musanze to Kinigi: The Final 13km
The 13km from Musanze to the park headquarters at Kinigi is a mix of tarmac and unpaved road. The road quality has been variable in recent years — parts are well-maintained, parts are unpaved with some surface roughness. A 4×4 handles the final approach easily. The road climbs slightly as it nears the Virunga volcanic chain, which becomes dramatically visible ahead — the distinctive shapes of Karisimbi (4,507m), Bisoke (3,711m), and the other Virunga volcanoes defining the northern horizon as you approach Kinigi. The Rwanda-DRC border runs along the Virunga ridge. The Virunga National Park in DRC is immediately adjacent to the Rwanda side, and the same mountain gorilla families range across both countries.
Volcanoes National Park Headquarters: Arrival and Parking
The Rwanda Development Board (RDB) headquarters for Volcanoes National Park is at Kinigi, clearly signposted on the approach road. The headquarters compound has a secure parking area for self-drive visitor vehicles. Parking is inside the gated compound — drive in through the main gate, identify your parking space, and report to the reception desk with your gorilla permit documentation. The parking area has ranger security throughout the day. Do not leave any valuables visible in the vehicle, but the parking compound is considered secure.
At the reception desk, you check in with your permit number and your passport. The ranger team then confirms your group assignment — each gorilla family group has a separate trekking team of maximum 8 visitors per trek. You will be assigned to a specific group based on your permit booking. The morning briefing begins at 7am sharp and covers: safety rules for gorilla approach, distance requirements (minimum 7 metres from any gorilla, mask required within that distance), group communication protocol, trek difficulty level for the assigned family’s current location (which changes daily based on ranger tracking), and emergency protocols.
The Trek: Timing and What Self-Drive Visitors Need to Know
After the 7am briefing, groups are driven by RDB vehicles (or follow in their own vehicle) to the trek starting point — a different trailhead for each gorilla family. Trailheads are at varying distances from the headquarters, typically 5 to 20km. If you are self-driving to the trailhead rather than taking the RDB vehicle, confirm the directions to your specific trailhead at the briefing. The trails lead from the agricultural land boundary into the forest edge and then upward through Hagenia woodland and bamboo zone toward the gorilla family’s position. The permitted time with the gorilla family is one hour. During that hour, the group stays within viewing distance (minimum 7 metres) as the rangers direct movement to maintain the family’s natural behaviour. Photography is permitted without flash. After one hour, the rangers signal the end of the encounter and lead the group back down to the trailhead.

Musanze Town (Budget to Mid-Range)
For self-drive visitors who prefer to stay in Musanze rather than in the Kinigi area, the town has a range of options at lower price points than the lodge properties near the park. The drive from Musanze to the park headquarters is 13km and takes 20 to 30 minutes — manageable for a 4:30am departure. Musanze’s hotel options include comfortable guesthouses in the USD 50 to 120 per room per night range.
Kinigi Village and Park Surrounds (Mid-Range to Luxury)
The lodge properties in the Kinigi area — within 5km of the park headquarters — charge premium rates for the proximity. Staying near the park eliminates the pre-dawn Musanze drive entirely: a 6:30am departure from a Kinigi-area lodge reaches the headquarters in time for the 7am briefing with minimal margin for error. Lodge rates in the Kinigi area in 2027/2028: USD 120 to 350 per person per night for mid-range options, USD 500 to 1,000 per person per night for the premium lodges. Nyungwe Forest National Park is 230km south of Musanze — a 3.5 to 4 hour drive via Kigali and Butare (Huye).
