Fort Portal — a compact, pleasant town in western Uganda at 1,520 m altitude, surrounded by tea estates on gently rolling hills, the Rwenzori Mountains visible to the west, and the extraordinary Ndali-Kasenda crater lake cluster to the north — is the base for western Uganda’s most diverse collection of activities. Within 50 km of Fort Portal: Kibale Forest National Park (the best chimpanzee trekking in Uganda), the Amabere Caves, the crater lake circuit, and the Ruwenzori (Rwenzori) Mountain Services base for glacier trekking expeditions. Most Uganda western-circuit safaris pass through Fort Portal, but few visitors take more than an overnight — those who stay 2–3 nights discover a genuinely attractive destination with character distinct from any other Uganda town. This guide covers Fort Portal for 2025.

The Crater Lakes: Ndali-Kasenda Cluster

The Ndali-Kasenda crater lake field (30 km northwest of Fort Portal, reached via the Kibale Forest road then a right turn at Ndali) is the most dramatically beautiful landscape in western Uganda — a cluster of 30+ circular crater lakes (remnant volcanic craters filled with deep, dark water) cut into the rolling tea-estate hills, each with steep sides plunging directly to the lake surface. The driving/walking circuit through the crater lake area (20 km road loop, 3–4 hours with stops) visits the most photogenic lakes: Lake Nyinambuga (the largest and most accessible), Lake Nkuruba (community-run nature reserve with boat trips on the lake and community accommodation adjacent to the water), and the extraordinary viewpoint above Lake Ndali (the Ndali Lodge viewpoint overlooks 5 lakes simultaneously from a single hillside position — the photography from this viewpoint of lake after lake retreating into the haze is one of Uganda’s most distinctive landscape images). Crater lake swimming: the lakes are free of bilharzia at altitude and the water clarity is high — Lake Nkuruba and several smaller lakes are used for swimming. Kayaks available at Lake Nkuruba community reserve (USD $5/hour).

Amabere Caves

The Amabere Caves (8 km west of Fort Portal, clearly signed from the town centre road) are a series of natural limestone caves and overhangs around a waterfall and stream, with outstanding fern gardens, a colony of fruit bats in the main cave, and an unusual geological feature of calcium-rich stalactites that resemble the shape of female breasts (hence the Rukiga name “amabere” — “breasts”). The site has a cultural narrative attached to it (involving a traditional Tooro kingdom story of a king who mutilated his daughter, whose spilled milk formed the stalagmites — a story told by every guide) but the site’s primary interest is the botanical garden quality of the fern and orchid community around the falls. Entry: UGX 5,000 per person (approximately USD $1.40). Duration: 45–60 minutes. The Amabere Caves make a good Fort Portal morning activity before the afternoon drive to Kibale or the crater lakes.

Tea Estate Drive

The Fort Portal-Kasese road (B99, running south from Fort Portal toward Kasese and the Rwenzori Mountains) passes through the most extensive tea estate landscape in Uganda — the TORO-MITYANA Tea Company estates cover the rolling hills south of Fort Portal in unbroken green rows of tea bushes, with the Rwenzori Mountains providing the backdrop to the west. The tea estate drive is a scenic alternative to the main road in either direction — allow an extra 30 minutes to take the estate road rather than the highway and stop for photographs of the tea pickers (with permission, politely requested).
