Uganda’s road network for safari visitors has improved substantially since 2015 — the main routes between Uganda’s major parks are now predominantly tarmacked, significantly reducing journey times and making self-drive feasible for the western and northern circuits. However, significant variation remains: the main road between Kampala and Mbarara (A109/A109) is excellent tarmac all the way to Fort Portal; the road from Kabale to Bwindi Buhoma is a rough murram section that requires a 4×4; and the Kidepo access from Kitgum is severely rough and takes 2–3 hours for 60 km in good conditions. This guide provides specific road condition information for Uganda’s main safari routes in 2025.
Kampala to Murchison Falls (Northern Circuit)
Kampala to Masindi (220 km via A109 through Luwero and Kampala ring road): excellent tarmac, 3 hours. Masindi to Paraa (Murchison Falls NP main gate) via Masindi Gate: 35 km of park road, largely gravel with some patched tarmac sections, 45–60 minutes, requires basic 4×4 or high-clearance vehicle (saloon car can manage in dry season but risks grounding). Alternatively, Masindi to Kichumbanyobo Gate (south bank) via Hoima-Butoha road: 80 km, mix of tarmac and murram, then 15 km park road to the Paraa Ferry. Total Kampala to Paraa: 7–8 hours. Seasonal condition: the park roads at Murchison are accessible year-round to 4×4 vehicles — the north bank roads become difficult in peak wet season (April–May) when the clay-based soils become severely waterlogged. 4×4 requirement: not strictly necessary for the main Murchison circuit roads in dry season but strongly recommended for the north bank game drive circuits in all seasons.
Kampala to Fort Portal and Western Circuit
Kampala to Fort Portal (310 km via A109 Mityana Road then B43): continuously good tarmac through Mubende and Kyenjojo, 5 hours. This is Uganda’s most-travelled tourist road and the best condition main route in the country. Fort Portal to Queen Elizabeth NP (Mweya): 90 km via Kasese, tarmac throughout, 1.5–2 hours. Fort Portal to Kibale Forest NP (Kanyanchu): 35 km, good tarmac, 45 minutes. Fort Portal to Bwindi Buhoma (210 km via Ishaka and Ruhija): 3 hours on tarmac to Ruhija junction, then 30 km on rough murram descending steeply to Buhoma — 4×4 required, 1–1.5 hours for the final 30 km. Fort Portal to Bwindi Rushaga (210 km via Kabale): 3 hours on tarmac to Kabale, then 45 km mostly murram to Rushaga — 4×4 required.
Kampala to Kidepo Valley (Far North)
Kampala to Gulu (300 km via A109, excellent tarmac): 4 hours. Gulu to Kitgum (100 km via B1, sealed road): 1.5 hours. Kitgum to Kidepo Apoka (70 km via murram/gravel road): the most important road condition section — 2.5–4 hours depending on recent maintenance and rainfall. The Kitgum-Kidepo road is regularly graded by UWA but deteriorates rapidly after heavy rain. River crossings: the Nguromo dry-wash crossing (35 km from Kitgum on the Kidepo road) can flood and close after heavy rain — check current road conditions with UWA Kidepo before departing Kitgum. 4×4 is non-negotiable for the Kidepo road in all seasons.
Fuel Stops by Route
- Murchison circuit: Last reliable fuel at Masindi (30 km from park gate). No fuel inside the park. Fill completely at Masindi before entry.
- Western circuit: Fuel available at Fort Portal, Kasese, Mbarara, Ishaka, and Kabale — no shortages on this route in 2025.
- Kidepo route: Last reliable fuel at Kitgum (70 km from Kidepo entrance). The Apoka UWA station occasionally has fuel but supply is unreliable — always carry 20–30 litres in jerry cans from Kitgum before the Kidepo road.
