Uganda’s wildlife destinations are spread across a large country — 241,000 sq km — with the key parks in the west and northwest, connected by roads of varying quality. A well-designed 10-day circuit from Kampala covers Uganda’s four greatest wildlife experiences: Murchison Falls National Park (boat trip, tree lions, Nile giraffe), Queen Elizabeth National Park (Kazinga Channel, Ishasha tree lions), Kibale Forest (chimpanzee trekking), and Bwindi Impenetrable Forest (mountain gorilla trekking). This circuit drives approximately 1,800 km over 10 days — entirely achievable in a Land Cruiser with early morning starts and careful daily distance management. Here is the complete day-by-day 2025 route guide.

Day 1: Kampala/Entebbe to Murchison Falls (305 km, 7 hours)

Depart Entebbe airport or Kampala city early — 05:30 latest — via the A109 north highway through Gulu road to Karuma. Enter Murchison Falls NP via the Karuma gate. Drive the 80 km north bank game track to Paraa (1.5-2 hours including game stops). Arrive Paraa by 14:00-15:00 for the afternoon Kazinga Channel equivalent — the 14:00 Victoria Nile boat trip to the base of Murchison Falls (USD $30/person, 2 hours). Overnight at Paraa Safari Lodge (USD $270/night pp full-board) or Red Chilli Rest Camp (USD $50/night pp).

Day 2: Full Day Murchison Falls

Morning: North bank game drive 06:00-10:00 (Rothschild’s giraffe, lion, elephant). At 10:00 take the vehicle ferry across the Nile (UGX 10,000/vehicle, 5 minutes) to the north bank. Return to south bank by ferry for lunch. Afternoon: second boat trip (if you missed it on Day 1) or top of the falls hike (1 hour, USD $10 additional). The top of the falls viewpoint — standing above the 7-metre gap where the entire Nile compresses before the 43m drop — is one of Uganda’s most dramatic landscape viewpoints. Return to Paraa by 17:30.

Day 3: Murchison Falls to Queen Elizabeth National Park (240 km, 5 hours)

Depart Paraa by 08:00 via the Masindi gate exit (south), then A112 highway south through Masindi and Fort Portal direction, then south on A109B toward Kasese and QENP. Enter QENP at the Katunguru gate. Drive 20 km west to the Mweya peninsula by 14:30. Afternoon: Kazinga Channel boat trip (14:00-16:00, USD $30/person) — the highlight of QENP. Overnight at Mweya Safari Lodge (USD $280/night pp) or the UWA Mweya Bandas (USD $70/night pp self-catering).

Day 4: Full Day Queen Elizabeth NP — North Bank and Kyambura

Morning: North bank game drive 06:00-10:00 via the vehicle ferry at Paraa — QENP north bank has the most open savanna for game viewing: lion, elephant, kob, topi, buffalo. Afternoon: Kyambura Gorge chimpanzee trek (14:00 departure, USD $50 permit, 3-hour return including the 1-hour encounter). The Kyambura gorge descent, the isolation inside the canyon, and the chimps’ energy creates a dramatically different experience from Kibale’s highland forest trekking. Return to Mweya by 18:00.

Day 5: QENP Ishasha Sector — Tree-Climbing Lions (80-110 km, 2.5 hours)

Depart Mweya early. Two route options to Ishasha: internal park track (80 km, 3 hours, very rough, requires 4×4 and patience) or external road via Kihihi (110 km via Mweya gate exit → Kihihi → Ishasha gate, 2.5 hours on mixed road). The external road is faster and more comfortable — take it unless you specifically want the remote park track experience. Arrive Ishasha by 11:00. Afternoon game drive (15:00-18:00) in the fig tree plains specifically targeting the tree-climbing lion prides. Overnight at Ishasha Wilderness Camp (USD $280/night pp full-board) or UWA Ishasha campsite (USD $30/night pp).

Day 6: Ishasha to Kibale Forest via Fort Portal (180 km, 4 hours)

Depart Ishasha → Kihihi → Kamwenge → Fort Portal (180 km, 4 hours on mixed road quality). The Fort Portal route passes through the Crater Lakes area — a landscape of explosion craters (some with lakes, some dry) that is scenically extraordinary. Stop at Ndali Lodge crater lake viewpoint (free, 5 minutes from the Fort Portal-Kasese road) for panoramic views. Arrive Fort Portal by 13:00, continue 36 km south to Kibale Forest’s Kanyanchu visitor centre. Afternoon: optional Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary walk (USD $10, 3 hours, excellent birding). Overnight near Kibale: Primate Lodge (USD $320/night pp) or Kibale Forest Camp (USD $70/night per room).

Day 7: Kibale Chimpanzee Trekking

Morning: Kibale chimpanzee trek (06:00 pre-briefing, 08:00 departure, USD $250 permit). The Kanyantale community encounter — 95%+ sighting success — is a 3-4 hour morning event returning by 12:00-13:00. Afternoon: rest, lodge swimming pool if available, or afternoon birding in the forest buffer zone. If you haven’t booked the Chimp Habituation Experience (CHEX, USD $250, full day), an optional second morning activity at the lodge (forest walk, mountain biking) uses the afternoon well.

Day 8: Kibale to Bwindi via Kabale (180 km, 5 hours)

Depart Kanyanchu → Fort Portal → Kasese → Mbarara → Kabale (180 km, 5 hours via the A109B). The Kasese to Kabale section climbs into the Kigezi highlands — the most scenically beautiful road in Uganda, with terraced hillsides, tea estates, and distant Virunga volcanoes. Arrive Kabale by 14:00. Optional Lake Bunyonyi visit (8 km from Kabale, 1.5 hours on the lake) before continuing to Bwindi. From Kabale to Buhoma (116 km via Kanungu, 3.5 hours) — most visitors overnight in Kabale (Skyblue Hotel, USD $45/night) and drive to Bwindi on the gorilla trek morning.

Day 9: Gorilla Trekking at Bwindi Buhoma

The reason you came. 05:30 wake-up, 07:00 at the Buhoma ranger station, 08:00 briefing and trek departure, 10:00-15:00 encounter and return depending on group position. 1 hour with the mountain gorilla family. Return to lodge by 14:00-15:00. Afternoon: recovery from the exertion, viewing the photos taken, or the Buhoma village community walk (USD $15, 2 hours) arranged through most lodges.

Day 10: Bwindi to Kampala/Entebbe (530 km, 9-10 hours)

The long return drive. Depart Buhoma by 05:30 to reach Entebbe by 16:00-17:00 — in time for late evening international flights. The A109 return via Kabale-Mbarara-Masaka-Kampala is entirely paved and manageable in one day with a very early start. Fuel: Kihihi, Kabale, Mbarara. Return vehicle in Entebbe or Kampala as agreed with the rental company.
