Nyungwe Forest National Park is the largest montane rainforest in Africa — a 1,019 sq km ancient forest in southwest Rwanda, isolated from other Central African rainforests, that has evolved a unique biodiversity over millions of years. Thirteen primate species including chimpanzees, L’Hoest’s monkey, grey-cheeked mangabey, and the Angolan colobus (in troops of 400+ — the largest single troop of colobus monkeys in East Africa) live in the forest. The 160-metre canopy walkway suspended above the forest roof is Rwanda’s most unusual wildlife experience. And the forest’s southern location — on the Rwanda-Burundi border — makes it a natural extension of a circuit that includes gorilla trekking in the north and lake Kivu’s shores in between. This 2025 guide covers all the key Nyungwe activities, current fees, and the logistics of a self-drive Nyungwe visit.

Chimpanzee Trekking in Nyungwe 2025

The Nyungwe chimpanzee trekking permit costs USD $100 per person as of 2025 — significantly less than Kibale’s USD $250 and Uganda’s gorilla USD $800. The Cyamudongo Forest chimpanzee community (a forest fragment 10 km from the main Nyungwe block) and the Uwinka community (in the main forest) are both habituated. Trek departs 05:30 from the Uwinka reception centre or the Cyamudongo roadside starting point. Encounter duration: 1 hour. The Nyungwe chimp encounter differs from Kibale primarily in forest character — Nyungwe’s dense, dark montane forest is harder to navigate than Kibale’s more open structure, and tracking can take 2-4 hours before the community is found. Sighting success: approximately 75-85%. The montane forest is at 1,800-2,500m altitude — cool (14-18°C) even in the dry season.

The Canopy Walk: Rwanda’s Most Unique Activity

The Nyungwe canopy walk is a 160-metre suspended walkway at 50-70 metres above the forest floor, accessed via the Uwinka trail system. It is the longest canopy walkway in East Africa. Entry: included in the Nyungwe park fee (USD $40 per adult per day as of 2025) — no additional charge. The walk involves a 1.5-hour guided forest trail from the Uwinka reception centre, arriving at the walkway access point. The walkway itself has two sections — a viewing platform midway and the full 160-metre crossing between platforms at the canopy level. At 50 metres above the forest floor, you are at the eye level of the forest canopy — looking across a sea of green with the Albertine Rift mountains beyond. Angolan colobus monkeys are frequently seen in the canopy at this level — black and white shapes moving through the treetops at eye height creates photographs uniquely different from any ground-level wildlife image. The walkway sways gently — anyone with significant fear of heights may find it challenging. Robust metal construction, good safety rails.

The Angolan Colobus: World’s Largest Single Troop

Nyungwe is famous among primatologists for the largest known single troop of Angolan colobus monkeys — a group of approximately 400 individuals that move through the forest as a coordinated unit. Seeing 400 black and white colobus simultaneously — a cascade of animals through the forest canopy making spectacular long leaps between trees — is a wildlife spectacle without parallel in East Africa. The large troop is most frequently encountered in the main forest area near the Uwinka centre on the CyaNyungwe trail. Encounters are not guaranteed (the troop covers a large area) but rangers track it daily. On a 2-day Nyungwe visit, the probability of encountering the main troop at least once is approximately 70-80%.

Getting to Nyungwe: From Kigali and Lake Kivu

From Kigali: 225 km southwest on the RN1 highway via Huye (Butare) to the Uwinka reception centre. Drive time: 3.5-4 hours on entirely paved road. The road between Huye and Nyungwe climbs into the forest through stunning highland scenery — tea estates at 1,600m, then the forest margin and the dramatic descent of mist on the forest edge as you enter Nyungwe’s microclimate. From Kibuye/Lake Kivu: 120 km on the RN2 lake road south to Cyangugu (Rusizi) then east along the forest boundary — 2.5-3 hours. Nyungwe Forest Lodge (the flagship accommodation, USD $380/night per person full-board, 2025) is positioned on a tea estate ridge above the forest with views over the forest canopy toward Lake Kivu. The canopy walk and chimp trek depart from the lodge by hotel vehicle.

Combining Nyungwe with Lake Kivu and Gorilla Trekking

A complete Rwanda circuit from Kigali: Kigali (1 day) → Musanze/Volcanoes NP gorilla trek (2 days) → Drive south to Rubavu/Gisenyi on Lake Kivu (1 day, 3 hours) → Lake Kivu (1 day relaxation) → Drive south along the lake to Cyangugu/Rusizi (3 hours) → Nyungwe Forest chimp trek and canopy walk (2 days) → Return to Kigali via Huye (4 hours). Total: 8 days, approximately 700 km, all paved road, no 4×4 required. This circuit is entirely practical in a Toyota Corolla or equivalent — Rwanda’s excellent paved road network means a 2WD vehicle is genuinely sufficient for the full country circuit.
