The southern Kenya safari circuit — Nairobi to Amboseli, Amboseli across to Tsavo West, Tsavo East, and back to Nairobi via the Mombasa highway — is one of East Africa’s finest self-drive loops. Covering approximately 900 km over 5-6 days, it combines Amboseli’s elephant and Kilimanjaro photography with Tsavo West’s Mzima Springs and volcanic landscape, and Tsavo East’s red elephants and vast wilderness. The route is entirely self-drivedable with a 4×4 in all seasons, and the parks are less crowded than the Masai Mara circuit making encounters more intimate. Here is the complete route, distances, fees, and what to see at each stage.

Day 1: Nairobi to Amboseli National Park (238 km, 4.5 Hours)

Depart Nairobi via the Langata Road and A104 highway south toward Namanga. The road to Namanga (160 km) is Kenya’s best-maintained highway — dual carriageway for most of its length. At Namanga town (2.5 hours from Nairobi), turn east on the C102 toward the Meshanani gate of Amboseli (80 km of dirt road, 2 hours). Enter Amboseli by 13:00, check in, afternoon game drive on the Enkongo Narok swamp road — elephants in the water, Kilimanjaro if clear. Amboseli entry fee 2025: USD $60 per person per day + USD $10 vehicle.

Day 2: Full Day Amboseli

Morning game drive 06:00-10:00: Enkongo Narok swamp for elephants (100+ individuals in dry season), Observation Hill for Kilimanjaro photography, and lion search in the open plains northeast of the swamp. The morning light on Kilimanjaro from Observation Hill (07:00-09:00) is the best photography opportunity in Amboseli — the mountain is clear before clouds build, the pink-orange sky at 07:00 creates a colour palette that photography can barely capture. Afternoon drive 15:30-18:00: Longinye swamp for evening elephant bathing and the cheetah that occasionally hunt the open plains between the two main swamps. Return to accommodation by 18:00 (gate closes at 19:00).

Day 3: Amboseli to Tsavo West (185 km, 4 Hours)

The connection from Amboseli to Tsavo West runs east via the Kimana gate (Amboseli exit), then south on the C102 to the Maktau gate of Tsavo West (approximately 140 km). This section combines: exit Amboseli via Kimana gate (south), drive through the Kimana wildlife corridor (private conservancy with significant elephant movement), cross the A109 Nairobi-Mombasa highway at the Maktau intersection, and enter Tsavo West via Maktau gate. The road condition is generally manageable in a 4×4 — the C102 has some rough sections between Kimana and the A109. From Maktau gate to Kilaguni Serena Lodge (inside Tsavo West): approximately 45 km on good park tracks. Tsavo West entry fee 2025: USD $52 per person per day + USD $10 vehicle.

Day 4: Full Day Tsavo West — Mzima Springs and Game Drives

Morning game drive 06:30-09:30 in the Kilaguni area (lion territory near the Kilaguni Lodge waterhole — the lodge’s waterhole is floodlit at night and attracts elephant, rhino, and buffalo). Drive to Mzima Springs (40 km from Kilaguni, 1 hour) — the crystal-clear volcanic springs producing 50 million gallons of daily flow, home to 50 hippos and large Nile crocodiles. The underwater observatory (included in park fee, no separate charge) allows 20-30 minutes of viewing below the water surface. The hippo viewing is unique — seeing a 3-tonne hippo swimming past the glass at 1-2 metres is an extraordinary experience. Afternoon: drive the Chyulu Hills gate road (north Tsavo West) toward the volcanic landscape — dark young lava flows, Maasai settlements on the park boundary, and good elephant sightings in the Poacher’s Lookout area.

Day 5: Tsavo West to Tsavo East via Mtito Andei (90 km)

The connection between Tsavo West and Tsavo East runs through Mtito Andei town on the A109 highway — the boundary between the two parks is the highway itself. Exit Tsavo West at the Mtito Andei gate, drive 3 km on the A109, and enter Tsavo East at the Mtito Andei gate (same town, opposite side of the highway). This transition takes less than 30 minutes. Tsavo East entry fee 2025: USD $52 per person per day + USD $10 vehicle. Drive 50 km north from Mtito Andei to the Aruba Dam — a large waterhole in the park’s centre that is the primary elephant and buffalo congregation point in dry season. Afternoon: Voi River area (lion territory, large crocodiles).

Day 6: Full Day Tsavo East — Red Elephants and Lugard Falls

Morning drive 06:00-11:00: Aruba Dam for red elephants and early morning activity (200-400 elephants at the dam in dry season July-October), continue to Lugard Falls on the Galana River (50 km from the main gate, 1.5 hours drive). The falls — compressed water passages through ancient rock in the middle of the Galana River — are worth the drive. Return by 14:00 for afternoon rest, then afternoon drive 15:30-18:30 along the Galana River road for continued elephant activity. Exit Tsavo East via Voi gate, drive to Voi town (fuel, accommodation), and overnight before the return to Nairobi.

Day 7 (Optional): Voi to Nairobi (340 km, 4 Hours)

Drive the A109 highway north from Voi through the game-rich corridor (giraffe and elephants occasionally cross the highway between Tsavo East and West) to Nairobi. The 340 km takes approximately 4 hours on good tarmac. This can be a morning departure with a late-morning wildlife stop at the Mtito Andei bridge (hippo visible from the bridge, crocodiles on the Athi River banks) before continuing to Nairobi by 13:00-14:00. Return vehicle to rental company.

Total Park Fees: Southern Kenya Circuit 2025 (2 Adults)

  • Amboseli 2 days: USD $60 x 2 x 2 + $10 x 2 = USD $260
  • Tsavo West 2 days: USD $52 x 2 x 2 + $10 x 2 = USD $228
  • Tsavo East 2 days: USD $52 x 2 x 2 + $10 x 2 = USD $228
  • Total park fees: USD $716 for 2 adults, 6 days
