The Mount Kenya circuit is one of Kenya’s most satisfying self-drive routes — a 302 km loop from Nairobi around the base of Africa’s second highest mountain (5,199m), taking in Ol Pejeta Conservancy (northern white rhino, black rhino, Big Five), the Aberdares National Park (forest elephants, tree-climbing leopard, and the historic Treetops lodge), and the scenic highlands farming landscape above 2,000m. The circuit typically takes 3-4 days and is entirely on tarmac — suitable for any high-clearance vehicle including a 2WD in dry season, making it the ideal complement to a Masai Mara or Amboseli bush-country safari.
Day 1: Nairobi to Nanyuki (193 km, 3 Hours)
Depart Nairobi north on the A2 highway through Thika (50 km, 1 hour), Sagana, Karatina, and Nyeri (174 km, 2.5 hours). Nyeri is the gateway town to both the Aberdares and the Mount Kenya south face. Lord Baden-Powell, founder of the Boy Scout movement, is buried in Nyeri’s St. Peter’s Church cemetery — a pilgrimage site for scouting visitors worldwide. From Nyeri, continue north 19 km to Nanyuki (193 km from Nairobi, 3 hours total). Nanyuki straddles the equator — the roadside monument at the Equator crossing on the A2 north of town marks the exact latitude. Mount Kenya’s northern glacial peaks are visible from Nanyuki in clear weather (most common in the morning before clouds build). The mountain’s dramatic profile — twin peaks Batian (5,199m) and Nelion (5,188m) with Lenana summit (4,985m) accessible to non-technical trekkers — dominates the eastern skyline.
Ol Pejeta Conservancy: The Primary Wildlife Destination
From Nanyuki, Ol Pejeta is 17 km west on the C76 road. Full Ol Pejeta details are covered in a dedicated guide elsewhere on this site. For the Mount Kenya circuit, Ol Pejeta provides 1-2 days of exceptional wildlife — the northern white rhino sanctuary (the last two individuals, Najin and Fatu), black rhino (approximately 150 individuals, highest in East Africa), lion, cheetah, elephant, and the Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary. Entry fee USD $90 per person + $10 vehicle. Ol Pejeta is the quality wildlife anchor of the Mount Kenya circuit and deserves at minimum a full day game drive.
The Aberdares National Park: Forest Elephants and Waterfalls
The Aberdares are a 3,999m mountain range immediately west of Mount Kenya, covered in dense Afro-montane forest above 3,000m and heath-moorland above the forest line. The Aberdares National Park (766 sq km) is divided into the accessible Salient (lowland forest, accessible by vehicle) and the higher Moorlands (accessible only to 4×4). The Salient is where most visitors spend time — forest elephant, forest buffalo, and the rarely seen bongo (one of Africa’s most elusive large antelopes) inhabit the dense riverine forest. The Salient’s Gura Falls (400m, one of Kenya’s highest) and Karuru Falls (273m) are accessible via maintained tracks in the dry season.
Treetops: The Most Famous Night Game-Viewing Lodge in Africa
Treetops Lodge in the Aberdares Salient is where Princess Elizabeth of England learned she had become Queen Elizabeth II on 6 February 1952, when her father King George VI died while she was staying at the lodge during a Kenya visit. The original Treetops (built in 1932) was a 2-room platform in a fig tree; it was burned down by Mau Mau fighters in 1954 and rebuilt in 1957. The current Treetops is a 50-room lodge on stilts above a waterhole that attracts elephant, buffalo, giant forest hog, and bush pig nightly. Guests arrive in the afternoon for animal viewing from the lodge platforms and night is spent watching the waterhole — an experience unchanged in essence from Queen Elizabeth’s 1952 stay. Night viewing is illuminated by red-tinted floodlights that allow viewing without disturbing animals. Cost: approximately USD $180/night all-inclusive. Bookable directly through Fairmont Hotels (which manages the lodge).
