Rwanda offers chimpanzee trekking at two sites within Nyungwe Forest National Park: the main Uwinka sector of Nyungwe, and the smaller Cyamudongo forest patch to the south. Both offer experiences with habituated chimpanzees but differ in character, trek difficulty, and accessibility. This comparison helps self-drive visitors choose the right option for their schedule and fitness level.
Uwinka Sector (Main Nyungwe Forest)
The main chimpanzee trekking at Nyungwe departs from the Uwinka visitor centre on the RN1 highway through the forest. The habituation community here ranges widely across the large forest area, making success rates variable (approximately 75–85%). The trek through primary montane forest involves steep terrain and can take 3–5 hours to locate the chimps. Once found, you spend one hour with them.
Trek departure times: 5am (recommended) and 1pm. The 5am departure is emphatically better — chimps build new sleeping nests each night and can be tracked from the nesting site at first light. Afternoon treks are longer and less predictable. Cost: USD $150 per person. Book through RDB.
Cyamudongo Forest (Southern Nyungwe)
Cyamudongo is a smaller forest fragment 40 km south of the main Nyungwe entrance on the RN1. Because the forest is smaller, the habituated chimp community ranges within a more compact area — success rates at Cyamudongo are higher (approximately 90%) than the main Uwinka sector. The forest patch is also lower altitude and in some ways easier to trek. Cost: USD $150 per person (same as Uwinka). Access: drive south from the Uwinka entrance on the RN1 to the Cyamudongo sector entrance — clearly signposted.
The limitation: Cyamudongo lacks the full forest atmosphere of the main Nyungwe because the patch is smaller and more isolated. The canopy walkway (the other major Nyungwe attraction) is at Uwinka, not at Cyamudongo — if you want both chimps and the canopy walkway in a single Nyungwe visit, you would need to allocate two separate days (one at Cyamudongo for chimps, one at Uwinka for the walkway) or accept one site per visit day.
Recommendation
For most self-drive visitors allocating one day to Nyungwe: the Uwinka 5am chimpanzee departure combined with the Cyamudongo option (if Uwinka chimps prove elusive) and the afternoon canopy walkway provides the most complete Nyungwe experience. For visitors with one day only who prioritise a chimp encounter: book Cyamudongo for higher encounter rates and accept that you may not reach the canopy walkway on the same day.
