The most immersive wildlife experience in Uganda is not a luxury lodge or even a rooftop tent at a designated campsite. It is a fly camp — an independently established bush camp in a remote area of the park, away from the main campsite infrastructure, with a ranger escort and nothing between you and the sounds of the African night. A limited number of Uganda’s national parks permit independence camping or fly camping in designated wilderness areas. Here is what is available and what it involves.
Kidepo Valley: Uganda’s Best Fly Camp Location
Kidepo Valley National Park’s Kidepo Valley wilderness area (distinct from the Narus Valley where the main camp is located) can be explored with a UWA ranger escort and fly camp accommodation in the dry season. UWA arranges this through the Apoka headquarters. The experience involves driving or walking to a remote site in the valley — the South Sudan mountains visible to the north, no other vehicles, no artificial light — and sleeping in your rooftop tent or ground tent with a ranger on watch. The Kidepo Valley is semi-arid and the sky at night is extraordinary. Buffalo herds pass through the valley at night and leopard move through the dry river beds. This is as close as most visitors will ever get to the truly wild Africa that existed before mass tourism.
Murchison Falls: Remote South Bank Camping
The south bank of the Nile at Murchison Falls has several remote bush camping spots accessible to self-drive visitors with their own equipment and a UWA ranger permit. The Wairingo and Paraanga areas are rarely visited — a full day’s drive from Paraa along the south bank brings you into wilderness that most Murchison visitors never see. Arrange this through the UWA headquarters at Paraa — 48 hours advance notice is recommended.
What You Need for Independence Camping
- Full camping equipment: rooftop tent or ground tent, sleeping bag, cooking kit
- Water for the full duration (no water supply in fly camp sites)
- Sufficient food and cooking fuel
- UWA ranger (mandatory for all fly camping in wildlife areas — arrange and pay at the gate/headquarters)
- GPS or printed maps of the specific area
- Communication: satellite phone or BGAN device recommended for Kidepo (no mobile coverage)
