Accepting a rental vehicle in Uganda without a thorough inspection is one of the most common mistakes first-time visitors make. Unlike renting a car at an airport in Europe or North America, where the vehicle is typically recent, regularly serviced, and covered by comprehensive roadside assistance networks, a rental 4×4 in Uganda will be driven on rough terrain far from any service centre. A problem that becomes apparent 200 km inside a national park was almost certainly visible during the handover inspection. This checklist takes 30 minutes and can save you 30 hours.

Tyres: The Most Important Check

  • Tread depth: minimum 3mm across all five tyres (four road wheels + full-size spare). Use a tread depth gauge or a coin. Marginal tyres on Uganda’s laterite tracks are accident-waiting-to-happen
  • No sidewall cracking or bulging — run your hand along the sidewall of each tyre
  • Tyre pressure: check all four road tyres with the pressure gauge in the toolkit. Compare to the recommended pressure on the door jamb sticker. Cold tyre pressure should be consistent across all four wheels (deviation of more than 5 PSI indicates a slow leak)
  • The spare: full-size (not a space-saver), same tread quality as road tyres, properly inflated, correctly mounted/accessible

4WD System: Test Before You Leave

In a parking area near the rental office, test both 4WD high-range and 4WD low-range engagement. On a Land Cruiser: shift to 4H (four-wheel drive high), feel the click-in of the front wheels engaging, then shift to 4L (four-wheel drive low) — the vehicle should drop into a noticeably lower gear ratio. Drive slowly in 4L to confirm engagement. Do not proceed without confirming both ranges work — discovering the 4WD does not engage on the Bwindi descent is a genuinely dangerous situation.

Engine and Fluids

  • Engine oil: dipstick check. Should be between min and max marks. Low or discoloured (very dark black) oil is a concern
  • Coolant: check the reservoir. Should be visible and at correct level
  • Brake fluid: reservoir under bonnet should be at correct level and fluid should be clear, not dark brown
  • Power steering fluid: low power steering fluid produces a whining noise — check if present
  • Fuel level: confirm exact level and agree on return level with the rental company. Photograph the gauge at handover

Tools and Emergency Equipment

  • Hi-lift jack: present and functional? Test by pumping it up and down a few times
  • Wheel brace: fits the vehicle’s wheel nuts?
  • Tow rope or recovery strap: present?
  • Fire extinguisher: legally required in Uganda, must have valid inspection date
  • First aid kit: inspect contents — not empty, bandages and dressings present
  • Portable tyre inflator (12V): highly recommended for remote routes

Documents: Confirm Before Departure

  • Vehicle registration certificate (logbook): original, not a photocopy
  • Insurance certificate: valid dates covering your entire rental period
  • Rental agreement: your name, rental period, and agreed km terms
  • 24-hour emergency number: saved in your phone before you leave
