Lake Bunyonyi — “Place of Many Little Birds” — is a crater lake in Uganda’s southwestern highlands, 75 km from Kabale and 420 km from Kampala. At 44 square kilometres and a maximum depth of 900 metres (making it one of Africa’s deepest lakes), it is a landscape of extraordinary beauty: 29 islands dot the calm water, terraced hills rise steeply from every shore, and the air at 1,960 metres altitude carries a cool crispness that is unusual in equatorial Africa. For self-drive visitors on the Bwindi circuit, Lake Bunyonyi is a perfect 1–2 night addition requiring no route deviation.

Getting to Lake Bunyonyi

From Kabale town: 8 km southwest on a winding tarmac and murram road. Kabale itself is on the main Kampala–Kigali highway (A109) — 420 km and approximately 7.5 hours from Kampala. For visitors approaching from Bwindi Buhoma sector, the lake is 2 hours east via Kihihi and Kabale — easily reached after the Bwindi descent. From Rushaga sector (southern Bwindi), Kabale is 40 km and 45 minutes.

The access road to the lake shore has some steep sections and loose gravel near the water — a 4×4 is recommended but a high-clearance 2WD manages in dry season. Some lodges have their own lake-access roads with varying quality.

What to Do at Lake Bunyonyi

  • Canoeing: Dugout canoes are available from most lodges and the community canoe landing. Paddling on the glass-calm lake at dawn, with mist rising between the islands, is one of the most peaceful experiences in Uganda. Guided island-hopping trips take you to Bwama Island (old leper colony, now a school), Akampene “Punishment Island” (where historically unmarried pregnant women were left to die — a sombre but historically important site), and the forested Bucuranuka Island.
  • Swimming: Lake Bunyonyi is bilharzia-free (confirmed by multiple health authorities) — one of the only lakes in Uganda where swimming is safe. The cool water temperature (approximately 20°C) makes it refreshing rather than warm.
  • Walking: Trails on the terraced hillsides above the lake connect villages and offer views across the water. Local guides available through your lodge for USD $10–$15.
  • Birding: The lake’s name refers to birds — 240+ species including the African jacana walking on lily pads, African fish eagle, various kingfishers, and the grey crowned crane (Uganda’s national bird) in the swampy margins.
