Uganda is an excellent family safari destination for children old enough to handle the driving and activity pace — and there are a few non-negotiable restrictions on specific activities. This guide covers what families with children need to know about Uganda self-drive safaris: which activities have age restrictions, which parks work best with young children, how to handle health precautions for kids, and what vehicle setup works for a family of four or five.
Age Restrictions: What Children Cannot Do
- Gorilla trekking (Bwindi, Mgahinga): Minimum age 15 years. This is a hard UWA rule, strictly enforced. Children under 15 cannot trek to gorillas. The restriction exists because young children may be noisy, unpredictable near the silverback, and unable to handle the physical demands of the trek. No exceptions.
- Chimpanzee tracking (Kibale): Minimum age 12 years. UWA enforces this for similar reasons. Children 12–15 can participate with parental supervision.
- Golden monkey trekking (Mgahinga): Minimum age 12 years.
Best Parks for Families with Young Children
Queen Elizabeth National Park is the top family destination. The Kasenyi game circuit delivers lions, elephant, warthog, and enormous kob herds with no age restrictions on vehicle game drives. The Kazinga Channel boat trip (USD $30, 90 minutes) is excellent for children — hippos passing within 5 metres of the boat are universally thrilling for all ages. The park road from Katunguru to Mweya is tarmac — no rough driving required if you stick to the main circuit.
Lake Mburo National Park is ideal for families with its lack of lions and elephants (making walking safaris possible), compact circuit, and the novelty of zebra — which young children find immediately engaging. The bicycle safari on the park’s flat tracks is memorable for children old enough to cycle.
Murchison Falls works well for families — the boat trip to the falls is accessible for all ages, giraffes are a family favourite, and the Paraa area has comfortable accommodation that doesn’t require roughing it.
Vehicle Choice for Families
For a family of four or five, the Toyota Land Cruiser Series 70 with a pop-up roof is the best vehicle — the elevated view and interior space work well for children, and the vehicle’s capability means you are not restricted in where you can take the family. The Prado is more comfortable on tarmac legs and suitable for the main circuits. Rooftop tent camping with children requires careful setup — a second ground tent for the children is more practical than fitting a whole family on a standard rooftop tent platform.
Health for Children in Uganda
- Anti-malarial medication: paediatric doses of Malarone are available but must be calculated by weight — consult a travel medicine specialist
- Sun protection: Uganda is equatorial — sunburn is possible even in cloud cover. Apply SPF 50 regularly
- Hydration: children dehydrate faster than adults in tropical heat. Carry more water than you think necessary
- Insect repellent: DEET-based at 20–30% concentration is appropriate for children over 2 years
