Serengeti Safari Self-Drive: Migration Calendar
- January–March (Ndutu calving): 1.5 million wildebeest on the Ndutu plains — 8,000 calves born daily at peak. Ndutu lodges and campsites book out 6–12 months ahead. Self-drive access via the Ngorongoro Conservation Area (Ndutu gate) — NCAA entry fee applies. Best predator density of the entire migration cycle.
- April–June (northward movement): Herds moving through the Western Corridor. Grumeti River crossings (June) — less visited than the Mara but equally dramatic crocodile ambushes.
- July–October (Mara River crossings): The iconic river crossing season at Kogatende. Herds cross the Mara River between Tanzania and Kenya repeatedly. The self-drive positioning strategy (arrive at the crossing point by 7 am, engine off, hold position) produces better views than most guided safari vehicles.
- November–December (return migration): Herds moving south toward Ndutu. Transition month — fewer vehicles, good predator sightings, lower park fees in some operator packages.
Serengeti Safari Self-Drive: Navigation
The Serengeti’s track network is extensive and partially unmarked in the north. Tracks4Africa Tanzania layer is mandatory for Kogatende and the Western Corridor. Google Maps and standard offline maps do not cover the full Serengeti track network to the accuracy required for independent navigation in the far-north sector.
