The Ngorongoro Crater self-drive is the most species-dense wildlife experience in Tanzania — a 260 km² collapsed volcanic caldera containing approximately 25,000 large animals including an estimated 30 black rhino, 6 lion prides, a resident cheetah population, and the highest hyena density in Africa. The self-drive descent at 6 am from the campsite on the crater rim reaches the crater floor before the guided safari convoy, allowing an unimpeded first hour in the crater’s concentrated wildlife.
