Rwanda wildlife calendar self-drive — the month-by-month guide to Volcanoes NP gorilla trekking, Nyungwe Forest chimpanzee tracking, and Akagera NP savannah game drives — is a fundamentally different document from the Kenya or Tanzania wildlife calendar because Rwanda’s core wildlife experience (gorilla trekking) is available and excellent throughout the entire year, making the Rwanda self-drive calendar more about visitor experience and park access conditions than about wildlife timing. The Rwanda wildlife calendar for self-drive visitors in 2027 and 2028 shows that gorilla trekking quality is consistent across all 12 months, Akagera game drives peak in the dry season (June to September), and Nyungwe Forest chimpanzee tracking is most productive in the dry months when the primates concentrate near water sources. This guide covers Rwanda’s self-drive wildlife calendar month by month.
Rwanda Self-Drive Wildlife Calendar: Month by Month
- January to February (long dry season transition): Excellent Akagera game drives — dry season holdover from the December-January dry period. Good visibility through the long grasses (shorter and brown in this season). Gorilla trekking in Volcanoes NP excellent — clear mornings in the bamboo and Hagenia zones. Visitor numbers lower than the June-August peak.
- March to April (long rains): The Volcanoes gorilla trekking continues unaffected by rain — gorilla families move through the mountain forest year-round regardless of rain. The trek is muddier in rain season but the gorilla encounter quality is identical to dry season. Akagera tracks become soft in April — a Prado is adequate but a V8 Land Cruiser is preferable. Nyungwe Forest canopy walk and colobus monkey viewing is excellent as the forest responds to rain.
- May (end of long rains): Rain tapering, landscape dramatically green. The Akagera NP lion pride and elephant family sightings are at their lowest concentration as water is widely distributed. Gorilla trekking at Volcanoes continues normally.
- June to August (dry season peak): The best combined Rwanda self-drive month for all three parks. Akagera game drives produce the highest wildlife concentration at the Akagera River and Lake Ihema (elephant, buffalo, lion, hippo, shoebill stork). Gorilla trekking permit demand is highest — book 4 to 6 months ahead for August specifically. Nyungwe Forest chimpanzee tracking is excellent with the chimps concentrated at fruiting trees.
- September to October (dry season end): Consistently excellent across all three Rwanda parks. Akagera game drives peak — the most recommended months for first-time Akagera visitors for game drive concentration. Gorilla trekking availability is slightly better than August (demand decreases after European summer holidays).
- November to December (short rains): Short rains (November) bring green vegetation and excellent bird diversity to Akagera and Nyungwe. Gorilla trekking unaffected. December dry gap offers good late-year conditions for the final Rwanda circuit timing before the long rains return in March.
