The Ssese Islands are an archipelago of 84 islands in the northwest corner of Lake Victoria — Uganda’s least-publicised destination and one of its most rewarding escapes. The largest island, Bugala, has forested hillsides, white sand beaches, and a pace of life completely removed from the safari circuit. Reaching Ssese requires a ferry crossing from the mainland, making vehicle access limited — most visitors leave their vehicle at the ferry terminal and explore the islands on foot, by bicycle, or by boat. This guide covers how to reach the islands from Kampala and what to expect.
Getting to Ssese Islands: The Ferry Route
The main vehicle ferry from Bukakata (on the mainland south of Masaka) to Luku on Bugala Island departs twice daily. The crossing takes approximately 2 hours. From Kampala to Bukakata: approximately 130 km, 2.5–3 hours on the Masaka highway then turnoff south. Your vehicle can be transported on the ferry to Bugala Island at a fee, or left at the Bukakata terminal and the island explored on foot or rented bicycle.
Alternative route: the smaller public boat (no vehicles) from Entebbe to Lutoboka on Bugala takes 2 hours and provides more schedule flexibility. For most self-drive visitors, leaving the vehicle at Bukakata and foot-exploring Bugala Island is the more practical option.
What to Do on Bugala Island
- Beaches: Several white sand beaches, particularly at Lutoboka and Banda. Swimming is possible but bilharzia risk exists in some lake areas — confirm safe swimming areas with your lodge.
- Forest walks: The interior of Bugala Island has some of the most accessible Congo basin-influenced forest in Uganda. Forest birding here produces species rarely seen on the mainland circuit.
- Boat trips: Sunset boat trips around the island, fishing excursions with local fishermen, and inter-island boat trips to the smaller uninhabited islands nearby.
- Cultural visits: The Sesse Islands are the traditional homeland of the Bassese people. Community cultural experiences, local fishing practices, and the distinctive Ssese canoe-building tradition are accessible through local guides.
