Uganda Lake Mburo National Park self-drive — the small (245 km²) savannah park 3 hours west of Kampala on the Mbarara road — provides two wildlife experiences unavailable in any other Uganda national park: the Burchell’s zebra and the impala, both of which are absent from Uganda’s larger parks (Murchison Falls and Queen Elizabeth) but present in substantial numbers at Lake Mburo. The Uganda Lake Mburo self-drive visitor encounters these savannah species alongside buffalo, eland, topi, oribi, and hippo in a park that receives a fraction of the visitor numbers of the more famous Uganda parks — game drives at Lake Mburo in 2027/2028 regularly produce game drive circuit experiences with fewer than 5 other vehicles encountered in the entire 3-hour morning drive. This guide covers Uganda Lake Mburo self-drive for 2027/2028.
Lake Mburo: Wildlife That Is Unique to Uganda in This Park
- Burchell’s zebra: The only Uganda park with a significant zebra population — estimated 5,000 zebra in the Lake Mburo ecosystem. The zebra herds are visible from the main game drive circuit within minutes of the gate entry.
- Impala: The only Uganda park with impala — 25,000+ individuals in and around Lake Mburo. The impala herds on the lake shore road circuit are very habituated to vehicles and allow close approach.
- Eland: The largest antelope species in Uganda — eland are seen regularly on the Lake Mburo circuit on the open grassland areas north of the lake. The eland’s distinctive dewlap and corkscrew horns make it one of Africa’s most distinctive antelopes.
Lake Mburo Activities
- Self-drive game circuit (2 to 3 hours): The lake-shore road and woodland circuit is entirely accessible for any 4×4 vehicle and most well-maintained 2WD vehicles in dry season. The circuit passes the main zebra and impala areas, 3 hippo viewing points, the buffalo woodland, and the raptor-rich rocky outcrops along the lake edge.
- Horseback safari (2 hours): Lake Mburo is one of the only East Africa parks that permits horseback safari inside the park boundary — horses are available at Mihingo Lodge and the UWA booking desk. The horse approach allows much closer access to zebra and impala than a vehicle.
- Night game drive (with ranger): UWA-authorised night game drives from the park gate (ranger-guided only, not self-drive after dark) — produce nightjar, genet, African civet, and occasionally leopard sightings.
Lake Mburo Approach
- Distance from Kampala: 240km, 3 to 3.5 hours via the A109 to Mbarara then north on the B004
- Position in the Uganda western circuit: between Kampala and Queen Elizabeth NP — an ideal overnight stopping point on the transit from Kampala to Kibale or Queen Elizabeth
