The Kigali to Volcanoes National Park drive — the approach road for Rwanda’s mountain gorilla trekking from the capital to the Volcanoes NP gate at Kinigi — is one of East Africa’s most pleasant tarmac self-drive approaches: 110km of excellent quality tarmac road via the RN2 highway, with the volcanic peaks of the Virunga Massif visible from the final 30km of approach for the last hour of driving. The Kigali to Volcanoes NP drive takes 2 to 2.5 hours under good conditions, making a very early (4:30am to 5am) Kigali departure viable to arrive at the Kinigi headquarters for the mandatory 7:30am gorilla trekking briefing with a comfortable buffer. This guide covers the Kigali to Volcanoes NP self-drive approach for 2027/2028 gorilla trekking visitors.

The Route: Kigali to Volcanoes NP via RN2

  • Kigali to Gakenke (50km): The RN2 heads northwest from Kigali through the rolling hills that are Rwanda’s most characteristic landscape — terraced hillsides, tea estates, and valley rice paddies. Road quality: excellent tarmac throughout.
  • Gakenke to Musanze (50km): The road continues northwest through Rulindo and Byumba toward Musanze. The Virunga Volcanoes become visible from approximately 30km before Musanze on clear mornings.
  • Musanze town: Musanze (also called Ruhengeri) is the service town for the Volcanoes NP area — the final fuel stop, ATM (Bank of Kigali, Equity Bank), and supermarket before the gate. 10km from Musanze to the Kinigi headquarters gate.
  • Musanze to Kinigi gate (10km): Well-paved tarmac. Follow the Volcanoes NP signage from the Musanze main junction. The Kinigi headquarters is clearly marked.

Kinigi Headquarters: Gorilla Trekking Briefing Protocol

  • The gorilla trekking briefing begins at 7:30am sharp — arrive at Kinigi headquarters by 7:00am at the latest to register and prepare
  • Permit verification: present the gorilla permit (PDF or printed), passport, and payment confirmation at the registration desk
  • The ranger briefing covers: rules of the 1-hour encounter (no flash photography, 7m distance minimum, no eating in the gorilla presence), gorilla family overview, estimated trek duration
  • Trek start: depart Kinigi by 8:00am in most cases — the rangers who tracked the gorilla family since dawn guide the group from the trailhead near the community forest edge, not from Kinigi itself
