Uganda is one of the only countries in the world where you can see multiple great ape species in a single trip. The country holds half the world’s remaining mountain gorillas, the highest density of chimpanzees in East Africa, golden monkeys on the Virunga slopes, and numerous other primate species. For visitors with a specific interest in primates — rather than just ticking the gorilla box — Uganda offers the most complete African primate experience available anywhere. This guide builds the optimal primate-focused self-drive route.
Uganda’s Primates: What You Can See and Where
- Mountain gorilla (Gorilla beringei beringei): Bwindi Impenetrable Forest (all 4 sectors) and Mgahinga Gorilla NP. USD $800 gorilla permit.

Primate Spotting Without Permits: Free Encounters
Beyond the formal permit experiences, Uganda’s parks offer excellent free primate encounters during normal game drives and lodge stays:
- Olive baboons: Enormous troops at Murchison Falls, Queen Elizabeth, and Lake Mburo. They will attempt to enter your vehicle if windows are open — do not leave food visible.
- Red-tailed and blue monkeys: Constantly active in the Kibale canopy — visible from the camp and road without any guided walk.
- Black-and-white colobus: Lodge gardens at Bwindi and Murchison Falls often have groups feeding in trees overhead. Extremely photogenic — brilliant black and white with flowing tail plumes.
- Potto: Nocturnal forest primate — request a night walk at Kibale or Bwindi for a high-torchlight encounter with this slow-moving, owl-faced primate.
